Dutch Customs Seize 3.2 Tonnes of THC Honey and Sweets Shipped from USA
SCHIPHOL, NETHERLANDS — Dutch customs authorities have reported one of the largest seizures of cannabis-infused consumer goods in recent history. During a routine inspection at Schiphol Airport last week, sniffer dogs alerted officers to two massive consignments originating from the United States.
The haul, weighing in at approximately 3,220 kilograms (over 3.2 tonnes), consisted entirely of winegums and jars of honey infused with Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Destined for European Markets
According to official reports from the Douane (Dutch Customs), the shipments were not only intended for the Dutch market but were also slated for distribution in the Czech Republic. While both countries have moved toward more liberal cannabis policies—the Netherlands with its ongoing “Wietexperiment” (legal supply chain trial) and Czechia with its decriminalization efforts—the bulk importation of THC-infused products remains strictly prohibited.
Legal Conflict: The Opium Act
Under the Dutch Opium Act, while cannabis flower and hashish are classified as “soft drugs” and tolerated under specific retail conditions (coffeeshops), isolated THC is categorized as a hard drug (List I). This distinction makes the production, sale, or possession of high-potency THC extracts and edibles illegal outside of specific medical or research exemptions.
“Imagine if these ‘sweets’ reached the market and children accidentally ate them,” stated Jeroen, a Customs Officer involved in the operation, NL Times reported. This sentiment follows a string of incidents in 2025 where children in the Twente region were hospitalized after consuming what appeared to be standard Haribo sweets that had been laced with THC.
No Arrests Reported
The Cargo Harc-Team Schiphol—a joint task force involving Dutch Customs, the Royal Marechaussee, and the Fiscal Intelligence and Investigation Service (FIOD)—has taken over the investigation. As of today, no arrests have been made, and the entire 3.2-tonne shipment has been earmarked for destruction.
