THC Monitor: Best Sold ‘Nederwiet’ Tops 13.8% THC

The average THC content of the best-selling nederwiet (marijuana grown in the Netherlands) in Dutch coffeeshops, was 13.8% in 2024. That is a similar potency with the strongest strain, which had an average of 14.7% THC. In contrast, hashish made from nederwiet (known as nederhasj) contained an average of 26.4% THC, while imported hashish contained 22.1%.
The data is taken from the 25th edition of the THC Monitor, conducted by Trimbos-instituut. The institute is appointed for weed analysis by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), and has tested THC levels in cannabis strains every year since 1999. For last year, cannabis samples were provided from 50 of the 565 coffeeshops around the Netherlands; samples were subsequently lab-analyzed for the potency percentage.
Method Changes Complicate Comparisons with Previous Years
Chemical analysis used the so-called HPLC-UV method, and it’s only the second time the institute has utilized it so far. While this makes measuring of cannabinoids more accurate, the results cannot be easily compared to years prior to the new method introduction. For any significant changes in the THC preferences of Dutch users, more will be known as we move forward.
According to Trimbos-instituut, the average THC concentration of the most widely sold nederwiet was 13.8% in 2024. In addition to the most popular varieties, the (presumed) strongest variety available in the coffeeshops was also tested. This one exhibited an average of 14.7% THC. Which makes the difference between the strongest and the most popular choice “not statistically significant.”
On the other hand, hashish from nederwiet was shown to have an average of 26.3% THC, similar to last year’s results; while imported hash stood at 22.1% THC, which represents a marked decline from earlier measurements.
