Foliar Feeding for Cannabis

Foliar feeding is a fast and effective way to address nutrient deficiencies in cannabis plants. Leaves can absorb nutrients much more quickly than roots, making this method particularly useful for promoting plant health.

Foliar feeding involves spraying a nutrient solution directly onto the leaves of the plant. This technique allows for rapid absorption of essential nutrients. However, most foliar spray products do not contain a surfactant, which helps the solution adhere to the leaves. As a result, without a surfactant, the nutrient solution may run off the leaves too quickly to be absorbed effectively. While foliar feeding can help with nutrient deficiencies and improve leaf health, it should not be a substitute for regular soil feeding. Foliar spraying can also be used to apply fungicides or insecticides to combat mold, pests, and diseases.

When is the Best Time to Foliar Feed?

For outdoor growers, the best time to foliar feed is early in the morning or late in the evening when the plant’s pores are fully open. For indoor growers, it is ideal to spray your plants 1-2 hours before the lights turn off or 1-2 hours before they turn on. This timing allows for optimal nutrient absorption.

Avoid foliar spraying when plants are in direct sunlight, as the light can burn the leaves and degrade the nutrients in the solution.

Correcting Limited Nutrient Absorption

Foliar feeding is particularly beneficial when there are factors limiting nutrient uptake by the roots, such as soil pH, temperature stress, soil moisture issues, root disease, or pest infestations. Leaf nutrient absorption can be as high as 95%, which is 8-9 times more efficient than root absorption. This makes foliar feeding a quick and effective solution for nutrient-deficient plants.

Stimulants and Growth Boosters

In addition to supplying macro and micronutrients, stimulants and growth boosters in foliar sprays can help promote healthier, stronger growth, ultimately improving yield and quality.

Foliar Spraying for Pests and Diseases

Foliar sprays are excellent for preventing pests and diseases such as spider mites, gnats, whiteflies, and powdery mildew. A commonly used substance is neem oil, which serves as both a treatment and a preventative measure. Neem oil has the added benefit of being 100% natural and possesses anti-fungal properties.
