Grantham court: Cannabis plants found in car boot

Last Updated on

A father who was found with 22 cannabis seedlings in the boot of the car he was driving says he is now determined to make something of his life and to make his four-year-old daughter proud.

Shamal Asaad, 28, of Cromwell Road, Peterborough was arrested in a lay-by on the A1 near Barrowby on April 17 last year. Police noticed a strong smell of cannabis in the Vauxhall Astra and after conducting a search found a box in the boot containing 22 cannabis plants at the seedling stage.

They then conducted a search of the defendant's home address and found in the basement five larger cannabis plants although still at a juvenile, non-producing stage, along with equipment to assist with the growing of these plants.

Asaad had entered guilty pleas to both possessing and producing a controlled Class B drug, and appeared at Grantham Magistrates' Court for sentencing on Monday.

Giles Tyas, defending, said: “He describes himself as someone who has made a mess of his life over the years, and is now wanting to make something of it. He is determined to make his four-year-old daughter proud of him.”

For both offences Asaad received a 12 month community order during which he must complete 120 hours of unpaid work, supervised for the first six months by a probation officer, and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £60 and prosecution costs of £85. 02/05/2014
