Easy Ways to Make Cannabutter at Home

Cannabutter is a key ingredient for making edibles at home. While it’s commonly used when baking brownies, once you have cannabutter there are so many snacks and sweets you can try and lace with it. Homemade cannabutter is great because you have the ultimate control of how much THC ends up inside, unlike store-bought edibles which can also be expensive. In this article, learn how to make your own cannabutter at home.
As the name says, cannabutter is butter infused with some cannabis. Cannabutter can be used in a variety of recipes; it can be added into almost any recipe that calls for regular butter. Preparing at home is pretty simple.
Ingredients and Kitchen Tools
All you need is three things:
- 8 ounces of cannabis
- 1 cup of unsalted butter
- 1 cup of water
Tools:
- Grinder
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper or tinfoil
- Cheesecloth
- Mixing bowl
- Saucepan or air fryer
- Container
Decarbing the Weed
As always, the first step is to decarb the weed and make sure THCA converts into THC.
- Grind the weed and preheat your oven to 212°F (100°C).
- Place a baking tray with baking sheet where you add the cannabis (small-to-medium chunks, evenly spread).
- Put the cannabis on the tray with the baking sheet and cover with tinfoil. Alternatively, you can use a silicone bag for the baking part.
- Bake in the oven for 40-60 minutes.
- The buds are ready when they appear to be a bit dried and brownish.
Melting and Infusing the Butter with Cannabis
The common way to prepare homemade cannabutter is in a saucepan put on low heat.
- Melt the cup of butter by stirring in a saucepan with water.
- Add the decarbed cannabis buds and simmer the mixture on low heat for about 2.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Once it’s ready, strain the butter into a separate bowl with a cheesecloth.
- Remove any visible plant remains.
- Move the butter in an airtight container, put it in the fridge and wait to harden before use.
Can You Make Cannabutter in the Air Fryer?
Air fryers have become the perfect kitchen appliances to prepare smaller meals with while spending less electricity. Air fryers also have precise temperature control, so you can test and try making a simple homemade cannabutter in it if you have one at your house.
- Decarb the weed in the oven
- Combine with butter and water
- Cook at 250°F (120°C) for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally
Basically, using an air fryer can save you up to an hour from the entire process of making cannabutter.
Can You Also Decarb the Weed in an Air Fryer?
You can test and try decarboxylation in the air fryer as well. However, it might be trial-and-error in the beginning, simply because you’ve never done it this way. If you feel confident to continue with air fryer, here are the steps:
- Preheat your air fryer to 212°F (100°C) and set a cook time of 60 minutes.
- Spread the ground cannabis material in a thin layer in the air fryer basket.
- Check the buds after 40 minutes to see if they are done already. If not, complete the 60-minute session and monitor carefully. Enjoy the smell!

How to Use Cannabutter in a Brownie Mix?
One of the most common recipes users tend to add cannabutter to is brownies. A classic brownie recipe would require sugar, flour, eggs, cocoa powder, vanilla, baking powder, and salt, which are mixed in two rounds until all combined together. In the same mixture, melted butter needs to be added. In our case, that’s melted cannabutter, which can substitute for regular butter using a 1:1 ratio.
Cannabutter should be melted at low heat to preserve its THC content. Then it should be allowed to cool slightly before it can be incorporated with the rest of the ingredients. See the brownie mix cooking instructions below.
- Prepare the cannabutter. Melt your homemade cannabis-infused butter in a saucepan on low heat. As soon as it's melted remove from heat. It will take a couple of minutes before it cools down.
- Combine the cannabutter with the other ingredients. First with the wet ingredients, such as eggs and vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture in a bowl until it becomes light and fizzy.
- Add the rest of the ingredients. In the same bowl, pour in the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder or anything else which you might be using as per the recipe.
- Arrange the mixture on a greased baking pan and bake at 350°F (175°C). Usually around half an hour is enough so that the brownie is well done.
Cannabutter, or cannabis-infused butter, can be used in any recipe that numbers regular butter. It’s a versatile constituent that can be charged into both sweet and savory snacks or dishes. Whichever meal or snack you decide to cook with cannabutter at home, make sure you enjoy it and don’t forget that edibles take time to hit.
