Can CBD Help Relieve Toothache?
CBD has been studied for some time as a natural painkiller for various ailments, including toothaches. While it won't replace dental treatment or cure tooth decay, recent studies indicate that cannabidiol can effectively relieve moderate to severe pain.
CBD as an Alternative to Traditional Pain Relief
Everyone experiences a toothache from time to time – whether caused by tooth decay, gingivitis, or after dental procedures. Recent research shows that CBD can relieve oral pain. Researchers from Rutgers University in New Jersey have shown that cannabidiol can be as effective, or even more effective, than opioids in combating acute toothache.
CBD treatments can provide relief from everyday dental ailments as well as after surgical procedures such as tooth extraction.
Could CBD replace opioids in dentistry?
Dentists often resort to over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. Unfortunately, not all patients tolerate them well, and they don't always provide complete relief. Opioids are sometimes used in these situations.
According to Vanessa Chrepa, an associate professor at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, interest in alternatives is on the rise. "We investigated cannabidiol (CBD) because previous research in other fields suggests it can relieve toothache without causing psychoactive effects, which is what everyone is looking for," explained Dr Chrepa.
Clinical Trial Results on CBD for Toothache
The clinical trial involved 61 patients divided into three groups. They received 10 mg of CBD, 20 mg of CBD, or a placebo. After a single dose, all participants were monitored for three hours.
The results were promising – participants who received CBD reported significant pain relief. The peak analgesic effect occurred approximately 180 minutes after dosing. The maximum average pain relief was 73%.
Additionally, higher doses of CBD worked faster and more effectively. The 20 mg group also reported improved bite force, an important indicator of proper masticatory function.
How to use CBD for a toothache?
While research suggests significant potential for cannabidiol, widespread use of CBD in dentistry is still pending. Until the US FDA issues official approval, these preparations will not be standard in dental offices.
An experienced user who has CBD oil at home can, however, try applying it before an appointment. For example, a drop of CBD can be taken before tartar removal – a procedure that is usually performed without anaesthesia and can be painful.
While CBD has promising pain-relieving properties, it should never replace a dental consultation. Every case of toothache requires diagnosis and appropriate treatment. CBD can be supportive, but professional dental care is always essential.
