Perfect Grow S02 EP08: Curing Your Buds
The final episode from season two of our show Perfect Grow is all about trimming, stirring and curing your buds, and getting the best taste and punch. Our grow expert Max also explains why it’s important to “burp” the jars during the curing process. Read below and watch the whole video on Soft Secrets’ YouTube channel.
Nearing the end of the flowering stage, plants have produced prominent big flowers with a lot of white on it. At this point, plants won’t create new branches, will not grow any taller, and all the focus is on the existent flowers. At the very end of the cycle, the cannabis flowers will become bigger, but the canopy should stay the same. Then comes the time to collect and trim the flowers and store them in jars. Let’s go through some of the key points and ensure you have a successful yield.
What is Trimming?
Trimming the buds means removing all the sugary leaves so that only buds remain. The first step of this is taking off the branches, and you can watch how it’s done in the video (the link is at the end of the article). Then you continue with cutting off all the small leaves that are around. As the leaves fall off, they reveal nice fresh flowers. Once done with the trimming, you can put flowers to store.
What Mistake People Make When Trimming Their Flowers?
One of the most common mistakes that growers make while trimming cannabis is that they touch the flowers too much and remove all the trichomes. So, avoid touching your flowers too much. Hold them on the branches. Trim them delicately. Otherwise, the trichomes will stick on your scissors and won’t be on the flower anymore.
How to Proceed with Curing?
Once trimmed, the next key step in the process is curing. This means to let the flowers or buds stay in a jar for at least a month. During the curing process, don’t forget to do the burping. That is, coming every day to the jar and opening it for about 10 minutes. This is done to renew the air inside the jar, which optimizes the curing process. In addition, you can put humidity bags inside the jars. In case you forget to burp the jars, the bags will buffer.
How to Notice Problems when Curing Cannabis?
Whenever you open the jars and feel the buds are a little bit spongy, this is not a good sign. It has to be the right way. Buds are good when they feel slightly crispy on the outside and a little spongy on the inside. If it’s too spongy everywhere, there’s probably too much humidity in the jar. And that’s why you need to open the jar and recycle the air regularly.
Another important thing is to fill the jar three-quarters full. This would allow for some air and ensure that burping the jars will happen the right way. When the jar is full to the brim, there will not be enough air and the buds will turn humid all the time. With loose space between the nugs, it should be much better.
