Weed After Work Does Not Negatively Affect Performance- Says Study

It has been scientifically proven that consuming cannabis in your free time does not negatively affect performance at work. Researchers from two different American universities have established this and published their findings in the journal Group & Organization Management.
Under the title 'Altered States or Much to Do About Nothing? In a Study of When Cannabis Is Used about the Impact It Has on Performance', the stereotypical idea that stoners are impaired at work has been refuted.
The study was carried out by professionals at San Diego State University in California and Auburn University in Alabama, which is not at all cannabis-friendly.
Influence of cannabis on work performance
In their study, they investigated the effect of cannabis use on ‘job performance’ before, during and after work hours. The researchers looked at the task performance, the willingness to help colleagues or the organization and ‘counterproductive behaviour on the work floor’ of 281 employees.
These factors were then linked to the time of cannabis use as reported by the employees themselves. As a result, it was found that smoking weed after work has no relationship – positive or negative – with any form of performance at work.
The authors of the study note that ‘contrary to widely held assumptions, not all forms of cannabis use harm performance’.In fact, ‘after-work cannabis use has no relationship whatsoever with any of the workplace performance dimensions’,according to the researchers.
‘This finding casts doubt on some stereotypes of cannabis users. And it suggests the need for more methodological and theoretical development in the field of drug use.’
“Individuals who decide to consume cannabis after they have finished their work may be (better) able to distract themselves from stressful work-related issues. The relaxation induced by cannabis can help employees build up energy that was lost during the day. And they may therefore bring more stamina to their jobs when they are back on the clock,” Dr Jeremy Bernerth, professor at the SDSU Fowler College of Business and involved in the study.
