Travelling with Medicinal Cannabis

Medical cannabis may now be legal in the UK, but travellers can still face barriers when travelling between countries with their medication. You should always keep your medicine within the prescription container to keep everything as stress-free as possible.

As well as this, it's always a good idea to support digital and physical copies of any relevant paperwork, such as the original prescription, and have the prescribing doctor's details to hand.

The legality of cannabis varies between countries, so it's essential to check the status of medical cannabis in your chosen destination country before travelling. A simple online search of the 'legality of medical cannabis' in your chosen country should help to confirm the regulations there. However, checking with the destination country's embassy for any specific guidance is also a good idea.

When travelling, you should follow the same principle for national guidance and keep any copies of relevant paperwork within easy reach. Many countries will often require a letter of proof to be shown at the border. This letter must include the following:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • The nations entered and the length of your stay
  • A list of medication, the quantity being carried, the strength and the prescribed doses
  • A summary of the health condition that the drug is prescribed for.
  • The signature of the prescribing doctor

If travellers have any queries, it is always best practice to contact the embassy directly to request to travel into the country whilst carrying medical cannabis.

Don't forget that if you have to transfer flights on your journey, you will also need to check the legality of medical cannabis in the country you are stopping in. For example, countries like Dubai, where many people change flights, have stringent laws surrounding cannabis.

Even in the UK, travellers should be aware of the requirements when bringing a controlled substance such as cannabis back across the border.

So overall, the top tips when travelling with medical cannabis are:

  • Keep your medication in its original prescription containers.
  • Keep all digital and physical copies of the relevant paperwork on hand. This includes prescriptions and the prescribing doctors' details.
  • Confirm details with the embassy of the destination country and any layover countries that you intend on visiting, however briefly.
  • Have your proof ready to be shown at the border.
