Cannabis for Treatment of Gout
Gout is a type of arthritis, a common and painful disease.
This inflammatory disease manifests itself in certain joints of the hands or feet (podagra in the foot, chiragra in the hand) and is mainly caused by an excess of uric acid, which in turn occurs when too many purine-containing foods are consumed. Gout, as a painful, inflammatory disease, can now be treated well with cannabis. THC, CBD and other cannabinoids have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect - however, a severe acute attack cannot be adequately treated with hemp flowers in some cannabis patients, and the doctor may prescribe an additional medication.
Diclofenac and corticosteroid preparations are the first choice here - not very often, but the active ingredient in autumn crocus, colchicine, is still prescribed. And this is where the problems can begin. After multiple checks, cannabis has been found to not be compatible with cannabis and may cause distressing symptoms including a racing heartbeat, dizziness, tingling all over the body, feeling of intoxication, wet sweat, impaired perception n, and fear of death.Â
The autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) is a plant from the botanical family of the lilies (Liliaceae). The main active ingredient is colchicine, which is found throughout the plant, but whose concentration is highest in the seed pods. 7 to 20 milligrams are considered a lethal dose. The drug Colchicum-Dispert contains 0.5 milligrams of colchicine per tablet and is taken in high doses throughout the day (dosage instructions: 1-3 tablets every 1 to 2 hours, i.e. 0.5 to 1.5 mg, until the pain stops).
In the case of the cannabis patient, the simultaneous intake of cannabis preparations led to the symptoms mentioned above. There may be cannabis patients who have had other - better - experiences with this combination. However, since no studies have been carried out on the interaction between colchicine and cannabinoids/cannabis, it cannot be advised to take these substances at the same time until further notice.Â
