Medical Cannabis Bike Tour Arrives in Bologna With Exciting News
The fifth edition of the Medical Cannabis Bike Tour rode into Bologna on May 19th after a gruelling 420km, 3 day, ride through Slovenia and Italy. Challenges on this year’s tour included snowy mountains, torrential rain, Italian truck drivers and the usual breakdowns, scrapes and wrong turns.
On arrival the tour announced some excellent news. The non-profit organisation has now raised enough money, thanks to sponsorship, to fund independent medical trials later in the year, using cannabinoids (THC and CBD) as a cancer treatment. MCBT founder Luc Krol said: “This has been another tour and another great bunch of riders and volunteers from all over the world. The MCBT family continues to grow! It is fantastic news that we have now raised enough money to begin clinical trials thanks to the generosity of sponsors of the past years.
The money will be handed over to Dr Manuel Guzman and Guillermo Velasco fromMadrid’s Complutense University to fund trials testing their research.” Dr Guillermo Velasco, who will be running the trials, which will be overseen by GEINO (the Spanish group of Neuro-oncology investigation), said: “After extensive discussions with the relevant organizations and with the funds that the MCBT has raised over the past 3 years we are pleased to announce that the protocol of the clinical trial is almost complete and that it will be submitted for evaluation to the ethical committees and the regulatory agencies shortly/within the next few weeks. If all goes as expected, we hope to start treating patients with cannabinoids in Spanish hospitals by the first trimester of 2017.”
