What is THC-M?

Many new hemp-derived cannabinoids have popped up in the last few months. One that you might want to watch out for, however, is THC-M, which is unlike any other cannabinoid we've seen so far.

THC-M may be one of the least understood hemp derivatives to emerge in recent years but what we do know is that it is showing a lot of promise.

THC-M was first discovered in 1997, not as an isolated cannabinoid but as a compound in cannabis smoke. THC-M has never been isolated, although we know it is a naturally occurring, trace cannabinoid.

Considered a naturally degraded form of THC that occurs due to ageing plant material, the jury is still out on whether it's technically a metabolite of THC. Of course, that ambiguity has not prevented hemp brands from using isomerization techniques to transform CBD into THC-M by rearranging molecules.

The first question most people will have is whether or not THC-M can get you high. And the truth is that no one knows for sure so far, but it looks unlikely. According to the limited information that we currently have about its chemical structure, THC-M doesn't appear to have any psychoactive capabilities. But, simultaneously, in the US states where it is being sold, it is being sold in vape form, which would, at face value, indicate otherwise.

THC-M vapes also contain psychoactive cannabinoids like THC-P, delta 8, HHC, etc. Whilst the THC-M is not likely to be psychoactive, it does seem to behave as a "cannabinoid potentiator". Combining THC-M with a psychoactive cannabinoid could strengthen and enhance – the overall 'high' you get from the other cannabinoids.

In theory, therefore, combining THC-M with Delta-8, for example, would make the Delta-8 more intoxicating by improving its ability to bind to cannabinoid receptors and increasing the effects felt throughout the body and mind.

When it comes to specific benefits of THC-M related to sleep, pain, inflammation and anxiety, the facts are still unknown. Without extensive clinical research and anecdotal information, no definite claims can be made about THC-M's benefits in a responsible way. But, the potentiating nature of THC-M is a good indicator that there are benefits there.

The idea is that taking THC-M with a cannabinoid like CBD, known for its therapeutic benefits, would, in theory, help to enhance the latter's medicinal effects just as it may enhance the psychoactive effects of cannabinoids like Delta-9-THC. THC-M is, therefore, a cannabinoid to watch for both recreational and medicinal users alike.

Although unheard of in the UK, THC-M is entirely legal under federal law. This is because it complies with the 2018 Farm Bill, which states that all hemp products that contain no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC are legal. THC-M is not delta-9 THC, so there are no restrictions on how products can be sold, it can exist at any level of concentration without limits.

However, cannabis laws in the US can vary wildly from state to state. As it stands, 20 states, including California, Nevada, and New York, have banned THC-M cannabinoids. This is probably due to the lack of solid evidence on its effects.

Suppose you are lucky to visit the US and fancy trying out THC_M. In that case, you will mainly find it in vape product that features a cannabinoid blend. You may also see it included in some gummy products. Still, it will also be within a mix of other cannabinoids.

Treat it as you would any other hemp product when shopping for THC-M. Look for quality brands with great reviews backed by excellent customer service and reviews.
