In a new double-blind clinical study, the minor cannabinoid THCV has been found to have energising effects but without causing fatigue and the “munchies”, both of which are associated with cannabis's more celebrated cannabinoid delta-9 THC.

Cannabis genetics company Phylos and research firm People Science announced the results of their study which indicated that a THCV product was found to “significantly increase energy, activity, motivation and well-being compared to placebo.”

What is THCV?

The cannabinoid, previously dubbed “diet weed” due to its evident lack of appetite-inducing influences, is one of multiple cannabis compounds that have emerged into more mainstream prominence in recent years.

In this recent Institutional Review Board-approved analysis, researchers gave 78 test subjects either unmedicated placebo gummies, delta-9 THC gummies or Phylos’s “Get Sh!t Done” THCV-dominant gummies.

The results found that 20% of the participants who ate the THCV gummies said they felt more “energised” compared to the placebo gummies, and 40% more said they found daily activities more enjoyable after taking the THCV gummies.

While 50% of those who ingested the standard THC gummy reported a feeling of increased hunger, an effect that was not statistically meaningful in the THCV group. Those who had the THC gummies were also three times as likely to experience tiredness compared to those who had the THCV.

The THC and THCV gummies were both found to “increase activity, exercise performance, motivation, and well-being compared to placebo.” The study was double-blind, however, it has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed science journal.

This study signifies a pivotal moment for the cannabis industry in understanding the effect of THCV in combination with THC. The Natural Natural THCV study allows us to leverage our exceptional plants in the advancement of targeted cannabis products, and to chart new territories in understanding the efficacy of natural cannabinoids.” Alisha Holloway, chief scientific officer at Phylos.

Scientists have been trying to tap into potentially beneficial minor cannabinoids like THCV as more outstanding awareness about the therapeutic potential of individual cannabinoids grows.

In this latest study, the researchers did not discuss the means through which THCV may produce these unique effects compared to delta-9 THC. Previous research however has exhibited that THCV, in lower concentrations, may be an antagonist of the CB1 endocannabinoid receptor. This means that consumers might be able to avoid some common effects associated with THC such as an increased appetite/ the munchies.
