Flintshire Council will safeguard medical cannabis users from prejudice, becoming the first Welsh authority to do so.

Councillors overwhelmingly endorsed a motion by Councillor David Coggins Cogan to safeguard tenants and council staff who are lawfully prescribed cannabis. The suggested action would permit officers to sufficiently fight the illegal use of cannabis by directing members of the public to show a prescription when proclaiming exemption.

Cannabis-based medicinal products (CBPMs) can be inhaled as a vapour or taken in the form of drops. Medicinal cannabis can be lawfully prescribed by specialist doctors in limited cases where other medications have not been successful.

The announcement of the proposition complies with the Equality Act. It guarantees that patients can take their prescribed medication inside without having to use specified smoking areas. It commits the council to operate cohesively with its partners in order to boost awareness and training and guarantee that organisations, including North Wales Police, comprehend and acknowledge the safeguards in place.

"This motion makes us, our communities and partner organisations aware of the stigma surrounding legal prescription drugs." -Councillor David Coggins Cogan
