POLICE were called by staff at a supported housing development in Wells who reported a strong smell of cannabis wafting through the building.
When the officers attended Keward House they went to Robert Paul Jack Tribe's room and he produced a quantity of green vegetable matter.
When he was arrested he told them there were further amounts of cannabis in his room and it was seized, Somerset Magistrates were told.
Tribe, 25, of Keward, from Wells, pleaded guilty to being in possession of quantities of cannabis bush and cannabis resin on Monday, May 13, when he appeared before the court at Yeovil.
Emma Chetland, prosecuting, said that staff working at the unit told the police they suspected one of their residents may be smoking cannabis.
When the defendant was confronted he handed over some green vegetable matter from a tobacco packet on his bed and was arrested," she said.
"He was then told there would be a further search so he produced another packet from his trouser pocket containing a similar substance and some brown vegetable matter."
The drugs were analysed and found to be 5g of cannabis bush and 1.8g of cannabis resin.
Defending solicitor Gareth Webb said that Tribe suffered from mental health issues and had been trying to move forward with his life.
"He smoked cannabis because he felt it helped him, however he understands that the organisation that is helping him will not tolerate it on their premises and called the police," he said.
The magistrates imposed a six month conditional discharge with costs of £35 and a £15 victim surcharge.
They also ordered the cannabis to be destroyed.
