POLICE found cannabis plants that a man was growing in a bid to make some money to pay bills, Grimsby magistrates heard.

Carl Bromley, 31, of Langton Close, Grimsby, admitted producing cannabis on January 8.

Rebecca Dolby, prosecuting, said police went to Bromley's home on a separate matter. He was "very evasive" and a search revealed a tent, cannabis plants and an extractor fan in a bedroom.

He said he "didn't really smoke cannabis" and was growing the plants as a way of paying bills.

The estimated value of the cannabis was £2,300. Bromley, who had no previous convictions, told the court: "I am sorry for my actions. I have never done it before."

Father-of-three Bromley, a steel polisher, was given 100 hours' unpaid work and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a Government-imposed £60 victims' surcharge.
