It's OK, Snoop Was Joking!
After sending shockwaves around the world of canna culture, as suspected by many, Rapper Snoop Dogg has revealed that he hasn't given up smoking weed — he's just plugging a smokeless fire pit.
"I have an announcement: I'm giving up smoke," the rapper, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., said in a brand-new advertisement.
"I know what you're thinking, 'Snoop smoke is kinda your whole thing.'"
But I'm done with it. I'm done with the coughing and my clothes smelling all stinky," he continued to the camera, completely deadpan.
"I'm going smokeless. Solo Stove makes fire. They take out the smoke. Clever."
The video posted Monday has gained nearly 2 million likes and hundreds of comments commending the rapper's marketing genius.
"Y'all just witnessed the power of marketing and advertising at the HIGHEST level," one fan commented.
"You got me, bro, Marketing GENIUS." laughed a second.
Some fans allegedly felt tricked after Snoop admitted that he wasn't quitting smoking weed.
"Damn, Snoop… you used the one thing that was your staple. That people knew you for and used it to promote a stove," one disgruntled user said.
"F–k the cannabis culture huh? I'm not mad; I'm just disappointed. That's whack."
Although others tried to reason the marketing trick, those who felt betrayed.
"To everyone saying Snoop tricked us, at no point has he said he hasn't given up smoking weed,"
Others used it as an opportunity to encourage those who may have been thinking of quitting themselves to leap.
"Even if he is still smoking, to everyone inspired to quit, still do it for you; you are worth it. If a whole fireplace can go smokeless, so can you."
Snoop's follow-up ad comes mere days after the "Gin and Juice" singer appeared to announce that he was giving up smoking weed.
"After much consideration & conversation with my family, I've decided to give up smoke; please respect my privacy at this time." Snoop wrote on a social media post of a photo of him praying.
At the time, it was suspected that the artist may have been giving up his favourite pastime due to health concerns and to spend more time with his wife, kids and grandkids.
Snoop has been married to wife Shante Broadus since 1997 and has three children: sons Cordé, 29, and Cordell, 26, and daughter Cori, 24. Through his kids, the music mogul and weed entrepreneur is also grandfather to nine grandkids.
The pop culture icon once said being "a grandfather has changed me."
"The main way it has changed me is being concerned with how I live, how I move, the kind of people I'm associated with because I want to see my grandkids grow old," he said. "The only way I can do that is to take precautionary steps regarding how I move, who I hang out with, where I go out, my intake, what am I intaking?"
With that in mind, we may see the day Snoop quits smoking for real!
