Traditionally, cannabis consumption has revolved around smoking joints; however, recent trends in New York City indicate a significant shift toward the use of edibles. This changing landscape has been highlighted in a survey illustrating the evolving habits of local cannabis consumers.

In 2021, New York State took a monumental step by legalising cannabis through the passage of the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA). This landmark legislation opened the door to a regulated cannabis market, setting the stage for consumer preferences to develop and change over time.

Now, four years post-legalisation, insights from a recent survey provide a comprehensive look at the behaviours and tastes of New York cannabis consumers. Commissioned by Jaunty, a New York-based company recognised for its expertise in cannabis and hemp extraction since 2017, the survey was conducted by SurveyMonkey and included responses from 500 adults living in New York City who regularly consume cannabis.

What Forms of Cannabis are New Yorkers Using?

Among the surveyed group, a notable 60% identified as regular cannabis users, consuming the substance several times each week. The findings reveal a marked preference for edible products among these consumers. Specifically, 40% reported that they primarily use edible cannabis items, which can include a wide variety of products such as gummies, chocolates, and beverages infused with THC or CBD.

In contrast, 21.8% preferred vaping as their method of consumption, while 17% favoured smoking flower. When it comes to extraction methods, the preferences were equally diverse. Among respondents, 23.6% indicated that they preferred distillates, which are concentrated forms of THC or CBD obtained through the separation of cannabinoids. This method is often prized for its potency and versatility in various products. Meanwhile, 19.6% expressed a preference for live resin, which captures the full spectrum of aromatics and flavours from freshly harvested cannabis.

Lastly, 9.8% of respondents chose live rosin, a full-spectrum extract made without solvents, valued for its purity and rich terpene profile.

Nicolas Guarino, CEO and co-founder of Jaunty, emphasised the sophistication of New York cannabis consumers, stating, "New York is home to some of the most knowledgeable and sophisticated consumers, and cannabis consumers are no exception. This survey should inform cannabis brands that our customers are paying attention and won't settle for superficial purchasing decisions. They are looking for seamless access to safe, affordable, and clearly labelled products that reliably deliver the desired effects."

This insight underscores the importance of quality and transparency in the rapidly evolving cannabis market.
