Fire at home in Glendover Road, Perry Barr uncovers secret cannabis production line
90 plants were taken from the property to be destroyed
A house fire at a home in Perry Barr yesterday (Tuesday) uncovered a secret stash of cannabis plants.
Fire crews were called to a blaze at a two-storey house on Glendover Road, Perry Barr shortly before midday, but later found three rooms in the house had been adapted to create a small-scale cannabis farm within the property.
Crews from Perry Barr, Erdington and Handsworth were called in to deal with the fire in the ground floor hallway of the property, which was well alight by the time they arrived.
Four firefighters using breathing apparatus went in to tackle the blaze which may have been caused by an electrical fault. However, once the fire was out crews discovered the cannabis and called in the West Midlands Police Cannabis Disposal Team.
“Following the great work by these crews the damage was mainly to the hallway which included the loss of the staircase,” said a spokesperson for the team.
“Once the house was declared safe we discovered three rooms of the house converted for cultivation with 90 plants seized.”
A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said mains supplies had been affected by the fire and that the electricity board had been called in. They added that gas and water supplies to the house had also been isolated.
