Does Weed Make you Paranoid?

Cannabis is known by many for reducing anxiety however for some it can increase it and make them paranoid.

This reaction isn't typical, but is also not uncommon. It is especially common for people who are new to using cannabis and unfamiliar with the sensation of being high. The disorientation can be extremely stress-inducing as can the loss of control that you get when your mental capacities are compromised to varying degrees.

There is another reason however why people may experience anxiety whilst high, even when they consider themselves experienced smokers.

THC binds to the brain’s cannabinoid receptors and releases dopamine, serotonin, and GABA. An increase in GABA and serotonin inhibits norepinephrine which is a neurotransmitter that is involved with alertness and anxiety and helps to calm most people down.

However, for some, a reduction in norepinephrine has a bounce-back effect where it stimulates activity in the locus ceruleus and limbic forebrain, 2 areas of the brain that are involved in arousal and excitment. This action in turn puts the sympathetic nervous system into overdrive, leading to an increase in heart rate and the release of cortisol, which is what we recognise as anxiety.

Paranoia is a distinct but oftentimes co-occurring side effect of cannabis and is typically induced by an increase in dopamine largely in the limbic forebrain. The increase in dopamine can result in some people feeling anxious and paranoid.

Sometimes it's the very people who could benefit most from the relaxing effects of cannabis who don’t feel them. While some people find relief in getting stoned, others’ issues may only become heightened.

Individuals' reactions to weed tend to remain relatively constant, so if it’s had the effect of making you anxious once, it might well just be first-time anxiety, but if you find it happens regularly then that is probably just how your brain is going to respond to it. People who do experience paranoia or anxiety reactions to weed should be wary of edibles since those highs can feel stronger and last longer.

What Can I Do if I get Paranoid from Smoking Weed?

If you find yourself experiencing weed-induced cannabis, getting some fresh air and moving around might help you metabolise the cannabis in your system. Some people find relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation to be of help.

If you are having a bad time make sure to tell a friend that you trust as they can help you through what can be a scary time.
