A FATHER of six smoked cannabis to soothe the pain of horrific injuries he suffered in a motorbike crash, Thanet Magistrates' Court heard on Friday.

A FATHER of six smoked cannabis to soothe the pain of horrific injuries he suffered in a motorbike crash, Thanet Magistrates' Court heard on Friday.

Police found James Golding, 31, smoking cannabis in a garden shed at his previous home in St Annes Gardens in Margate on July 2.

Golding broke numerous bones and tore a one-and-a-half inch whole in his foot in a crash last October and was using the drug for medicinal purposes.

Defending, Ashley Mayes of Kent Defence said: "It seems this is the only thing recently that has been able to alleviate him of his pain."

After his arrest, Golding told police he smoked the cannabis outside the house to keep away from his children, aged between one and eight.

The court heard that his injuries have caused such a strain in his relationship that he has had to leave the family home.

Mrs Mayes said: "This has been very difficult for him. He has trouble sleeping because of the pain.

"He wakes in the middle of the night and just says he feels suicidal."

Golding, who now lives in Cliftonville, pleaded guilty to possessing the "small amount" of cannabis.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a total of £200 in court fines and costs.
