HAVING left his bag behind by mistake in a Truro pub a 29-year-old man returned later to collect it only to find police waiting to speak to him.

In his absence door staff had looked in the bag and found some herbal cannabis which they reported to the police.

Edward Bridgewater, of Trevarrian, Watergate Bay, Newquay, appeared before Truro magistrates by video link from Exeter Prison, pleading guilty to possessing 7.19 grammes of cannabis on June 16.

Scott Horner, counsel for the CPS, said the cannabis was worth £44.65 on the street.

Bridgewater told police officers the drug was for his own use and he had not thought it was illegal to have it in a public place any more. He had previous convictions including one for a similar offence.

Martin Pearce, his solicitor, said he was currently on remand in Exeter Prison awaiting an appearance before Truro Crown Court.

Bridgewater was fined £100 and sentenced to one day in prison in lieu of payment.
