Lady Gaga’s No Ordinary Journey with Mary Jane
Her real name is Stefani Germanotta. But to the world she is the one and only Lady Gaga. The extravagant pop icon has experimented successfully in various musical genres, along with starring in dozens of movies. She has nabbed as many as 117 different awards, from Grammy's to golden Oscar statuettes. Whether you wonder if she smokes marijuana, well, Mother Monster does have a lot of unique stories to tell about Mary Jane.
Lady Gaga has openly talked about her cannabis use on numerous occasions. The famous singer and performer has relied on marijuana to ignite her creative spirit, as well as to treat fibromyalgia, a muscular disorder accompanied with chronic pain, fatigue and mood disorder symptoms.
The Edge of Glory singer has said that cannabis helped her deal with stress that comes with living a life in the spotlight and the pressure to always create new exciting music.
Marijuana is what fuels her creative process, she said way back during a 2011 episode of “60 Minutes.”
“I smoke a lot of pot when I write music. So I’m not gonna, like, sugar coat it for ‘60 Minutes’ that, you know, I’m some, like, sober human being ‘cause I’m not,” she said.
The pop icon has smoked during concert performances as well. Like that one time in Amsterdam when she took a hit on stage from a fan’s joint on stage.
Lady Gaga Married the Night or Marijuana?
In a radio interview from 2013, Gaga reportedly said that the pressure to constantly create new music has led her to uncontrolled use of weed.
The pop star at one point reportedly smoked 15-20 cannabis cigarettes a day to deal with the physical and mental stress.
“I have been addicted to it and it’s ultimately related to anxiety coping and it’s a form of self-medication and I was smoking up to 15-20 marijuana cigarettes a day with no tobacco,” she said in an interview with Elvis Duran and The Z100 Morning Shows.
Lady Gaga started to overuse cannabis after suffering a hip injury, an injury serious enough that forced her to cancel a leg of her Born This Way tour back in 2013.
“I was living in a totally other psychedelic plane, numbing myself completely, and looking back I do see now that some of it had to do with my hip pain,” she said. “I didn’t know where the pain was coming from so I was just in a lot of pain and very depressed all the time and not really sure why.”
Things got on the right track again after an intervention from legendary performance artist Marina Abramović.
“It wasn’t until I was with Marina and she said, ‘Okay you’re coming to my house, No television, no computer, no marijuana, no nothing, no food. For three days, art only. You eat only art,” Gaga recalled in an interview.
“I cold-turkeyed. For weeks and weeks I didn’t smoke at all. And now I smoke a little bit at night, just you know, for fun - but not to cope. That’s the difference. Marina was the only person who could get me to do that and it was not intended to be rehab,” Lady Gaga said.
Gaga also discusses cannabis in her 2017 Netflix documentary, called “Gaga: Five Foot Two,” a film that dives deeper in the personal life of the pop star.
While Lady Gaga talks about her medicinal use of cannabis in the documentary, the real piece of cake is a clip that rolls in the end of it. There goes an anecdote about how Gaga made Beyoncé feel uncomfortable after toking a lot of joints in her presence.
A friend asks Lady Gaga how she managed to do that, and she says in the clip: “I don’t know, I just always feel like when I’m with her and Jay-Z, I’m always like hanging out in the corner with like nine joints hanging out of my mouth being like “Whaaat’s up?!” and she’s like “You’re not a lady but why? How is this working?”
Well, those are definitely some great stories you can tell to your friends and fans on your 38th birthday! Many happy returns of the day, Lady Gaga!
