Facebook Is Putting The Strain On Alaskan Cannabis Companies

According to a report by the Alaska Dispatch News, six Alaska-based cannabis companies have had their Facebook accounts either shut down or deleted entirely.
Arctic Herbery, Enlighten Alaska, Frozen Budz, Pakalolo Supply Co., Dankorage, and Alaska Fireweed all use the social media platform as a means of advertising their businesses. For many of them, Facebook is their sole means of getting word of their product out to the public. Shutdowns occurred over the weekend, forcing Alaskan cannabis companies to focus on bolstering Twitter and Instagram followings instead of utilizing the advantages of their preferred means of advertising. However, Instagram is also owned by Facebook.
Spokeswoman for the social media giant Ruchika Budhraja stated that the company has community standards, and that “anyone can report content…if they think it violates standards.” Reports are sent to Facebook and then reviewed to see if they are, in fact, in violation of the site’s terms of service.
Under the regulated goods standards of the social media platform, marijuana is prohibited. This is in addition to prescription drugs, firearms and ammunition.
The most eyebrow-raising part of this is that the blackout happened after or around the same time that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg visited the state for 4th of July weekend.
Budhraja stated that she “wouldn’t think” that Zuckerberg’s visit and the Facebook page shutdowns are at all linked, but cannabis business owners are not entirely convinced.
Rich Beezely, the chief operating officer of AK Frozen Budz, calls the shutdowns “a weird coincidence.” He also asserts that his company’s Facebook page was saved because they were closed over the weekend, and the page was not active at that time. AK Frozen Budz’s page had been targeted by Facebook administrators four times in the past.
“We face challenges every day running a legal cannabis business, but this is a disappointing one,” said Keenan Hollister of Pakalolo in Fairbanks, “It feels like an attack on commerce in our state.”
