Drug Policy Foundation Launch Campaign for UK Canna Reform
Transform is looking to fundraise £50,000 to fund its fight to bring “responsible cannabis regulation” to the UK.
Recent polls have revealed that over half of the UK population currently support cannabis legalisation. An estimated 2.5 million people are consuming it every year.
Countries across Europe are moving towards more liberal cannabis laws all the time. In April of this year, cannabis was removed from the list of narcotics in Germany where it is now legal for recreational use and adults over 21 are now permitted to possess up to 25g at a time and cultivate up to four plants privately at home.
Switzerland and the Netherlands have also both seen the introduction of trials to examine controlled cannabis sales via retail supply chains, In the UK however, even throughout the latest election campaign, drug policy was very obviously missing from the manifestos of all the big political parties.
Transform argues that cannabis prohibition fuels crime and sees profits going untaxed into the hands of criminals as well as presenting health risks from the unregulated way it has been produced.
“A legalised UK cannabis market would responsibly regulate the production and sale of cannabis" - Transform Website
Transform believes that quality controls, testing and proper labelling would allow people to understand what they’re buying. The revenue going to the UK Government in the form of tax, would support health, education and harm reduction movements and provide people with information on responsible use and the associated risks of using cannabis. A safer regulated market would safeguard people from the dangers of the existing illegal one.
£50,000 will be enough to fund a prominent campaign to take advantage of pivoting public opinion and to address the issue with policymakers.
Part of the plan is to build cross-party support in Parliament and create a Private Members' Bill to operate as a rallying punch for reform. Transform wants to work with experts and affected communities, to find a way to provide adult-use regulation, alongside a calculation of the economic opportunities a regulated market would bring.
“Other governments have seen the opportunity that legalising and regulating cannabis offers – it’s now time for the UK to catch up." Transform
