Anti-Cannabis Group Urges Against Reclassification in the USA

The anti-cannabis organization Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) has launched a television campaign urging President Trump not to reschedule cannabis. This prohibitionist group argues that rescheduling would benefit Chinese cartels and trivialize cannabis use.
Former boxer and cannabis entrepreneur Mike Tyson has recently called on Donald Trump to reclassify cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). However, SAM opposes this reclassification.
What Are the Concerns About Rescheduling Cannabis?
The SAM group has funded three television advertisements that will air on Fox News and Fox Business Network. They believe that reclassifying cannabis would strengthen Chinese cartels and undermine the government's "Make America Healthy" agenda. SAM contends that reclassification could give these cartels a tax advantage. In one of its advertisements, the group states, "Chinese drug cartels are already well established in the American cannabis trade, taking advantage of the situation while our greatest adversary destabilizes our communities."
The organization emphasizes the potential negative effects of cannabis, which they consider toxic. According to SAM, cannabis use can lead to laziness, a decline in IQ, psychosis, and even suicide. They express particular concern about cannabis with high THC concentrations, which is widely available in the United States.
SAM asserts that such cannabis is especially harmful to young people, leading to addiction and significant psychosis. Additionally, they worry that currently legal cannabis products may contain pesticides, adulterants, and be derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
