CBD for Mental Health

Anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders are among the most common reasons people try CBD. The latest scientific research on the subject shows that an oral CBD solution effectively treats mild to moderate anxiety, as well as the associated symptoms of depression and sleep disorders, without causing serious side effects.

A new industry-backed study shows that taking 300-600 mg of CBD orally for three months is an effective treatment plan for treating moderate anxiety with symptoms of depression and sleep disorders.

The results are consistent with other research showing that CBD can reduce anxiety when taken over a longer period, such as at least one month and up to three months, the study authors noted.

The research was recently published in the Asian Journal of Psychiatry. The team of authors includes employees from Asha Hospital Leiutis Pharmaceuticals LLP (India) and Biosphere Pharma Inc. (New Jersey).

CBD may help with mood swings and depression

Recent research suggests that an oral cannabidiol solution can help with mild to moderate anxiety without causing negative side effects at the end of treatment. CBD has also been shown to be effective for other accompanying symptoms of anxiety, such as depression and sleep disorders.

For the study, participants were divided into two groups. The first group received 300 mg of CBD per day at the beginning and later increased this dose to 600 mg per day. At the end of the study, the dose was reduced to 150 mg per day. The second group served as a control group and received a placebo.

The research team used several tests to measure each participant's anxiety level. They administered GAD-7, a standardized anxiety test that measures anxiety scores from mild to severe. Observations and tests showed that anxiety markers decreased in those taking CBD. There were no significant changes in scores in control group participants. Similar results were also obtained from the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, another common test used to assess anxiety.

The study authors wrote that CBD administration “demonstrated therapeutic efficacy, excellent safety, and tolerability in the treatment of not only mild to moderate anxiety disorders (the primary endpoint of the study) but also associated depression and sleep quality disturbances (the secondary endpoint of the study).”

There were “no cases of withdrawal anxiety during dose reduction at the end of treatment,” the researchers added.

The report concludes that CBD acts as an effective anxiolytic and that oral CBD formulas have the potential to treat various psychiatric disorders alone or in combination with other medications.

How does CBD work?

CBD is derived from cannabis or hemp and does not contain THC, meaning it is non-psychoactive.

  • It plays a role in enhancing the effects of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in controlling mood and anxiety.
  • It lowers the levels of stress hormones like cortisol, which in turn reduces the negative effects of anxiety and stress.
  • It reduces inflammation, which often underlies various health problems, including anxiety.
  • It has neuroprotective properties, protecting the brain from damage that can be caused by stress and anxiety.

CBD vs. Antidepressants

Antidepressants are a common therapy for mood and anxiety disorders. While they can be very helpful in relieving anxiety, they can also lead to other health problems. This is the main reason why medical research is putting so much emphasis on exploring the full potential of CBD in treating mood disorders. CBD can deliver results without causing the side effects associated with antidepressants.
