CBD Effective for Menstrual Cramps
A new study published recently has examined the efficacy of CBD tampons for treating severe menstrual cramps and associated pain.
Researchers found evidence that CBD-infused tampons “achieved statistically significant pain reduction” and provided “fewer side effects than anti-inflammatories while producing a similar pain-relieving effect.”
The study team included five researchers from Anne’s Day Ltd., a UK company described as a natural sciences and engineering development. Lead author Valentina Milanova is also CEO and founder of Daye, a company which sells CBD-infused tampons.
“The findings indicate the potential of CBD-infused tampons as a promising option for managing menstrual pain; further research and exploration of this innovative product can contribute to managing primary dysmenorrhea.” said the conclusion of the study.
Primary dysmenorrhea, or menstrual cramps, affects anywhere between 50%-95% of women. The study examines how CB1 and CB2 receptors are present throughout uterine tissue in the human body, explaining why cannabinoids in that area are easy to administer and why they may be effective in relieving pain.
One hundred fourteen participants aged 18 and 45 participated in the study over three months. They were given either a CBD-infused tampon or a regular tampon. They were then interviewed about their various levels of pain, which included “ irritation, sensitisation, systemic toxicity, material-mediated pyrogenicity, and potential toxic shock syndrome risk.” The study took place over three months.
Whilst the findings of this study are very promising for women's health, more extensive clinical studies are needed to explore the topic further and before any solid medical claims can be made.
