A CANNABIS grower arrested after an accidental 999 call directed police to his Redditch home has been given a suspended jail sentence.

A CANNABIS grower arrested after an accidental 999 call directed police to his Redditch home has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Nikolas Wallace had 48 plants potentially worth £13,000 in the bedroom of his home in South Street, Worcester Crown Court heard.

His girlfriend inadvertently pressed 999 on her mobile phone and after she rang off, police were directed to his two bedroomed flat looking for the source of the call, Nicholas Cartwright, prosecuting, told the court.

They found her there with Wallace and their young child on the night of December 2 last year, he said.

The plants were found under a tent with a hydroponic setup.

Wallace, a heavy cannabis user, told police it was all his idea and he gave his girlfriend no choice over his plan to turn the bedroom over to cannabis production.

Nigel Stelling, defending, said the plants were in a poor condition and Wallace did not appear to have the skill to grow them properly.

They needed a bigger space, better lighting and more equipment for a successful crop.

Wallace, he said, had to understand that at the age of 23 he had responsibilities to his young family and had to work on his problems with gambling and drugs.

Recorder Graeme Cliff gave Wallace a 12 month sentence suspended for two years with twelve months supervision after he pleaded guilty to one charge of producing cannabis.

He was also ordered to undertake programmes designed to help him tackle gambling and drug use.
