The Best Ways to Germinate Cannabis Seeds
Established cannabis seed companies routinely test their seed batches to ensure germination rates of 95% or higher. However, if you're experiencing poor germination rates, maximising this is crucial for a successful grow.
Here are some methods to help you achieve better results. Please handle seeds with great care, ensuring your hands are clean and free of any chemicals, soaps, or detergents.
How Do I Germinate My Cannabis Seeds?
1. The Wet Paper Towel Method: This is a popular technique among growers. Take a damp sheet of paper towel and place the seeds inside. Fold the paper towel over and put it in a sealed sandwich bag to prevent it from drying out. After approximately one day, check the seeds. If a taproot has emerged, it should be pointing downward when you place it in the next container.
2. Soak the Seed in Water: Many growers believe that soaking seeds in water for a day helps soften the shell and increases the chances of successful germination. Use a clean glass that has been rinsed beforehand. After 24 hours, remove the seeds and plant them in the desired growing medium, ensuring that any emerging roots are pointing downward.
3. Plant the Seed in Soil or Coco and Cover with Plastic Wrap: Plant the seed 5-10mm below the surface in moist conditions to promote good germination rates. Cover the container with plastic wrap to maintain humidity. Once the seed germinates, you can remove the plastic wrap.
4. Plant the Seed, Water, and Wait: This is a traditional method that mimics natural seed germination. Simply bury the seed under 5-10mm of soil, water it, and wait. Mist the soil surface every few hours with water to prevent it from drying out.
5. Use Specialist Germination Cubes: Available at garden centres and hydroponic shops, germination cubes are madefrom sponge-like materials that retain moisture while allowing small roots to develop. These cubes can be made from glass wool, coconut fibre, or synthetic polymer sponge. Follow the specific instructions for the cubes. Wet them with water (some prefer bottled or buffered water), and push the seed about 5mm below the surface. Place the damp germination cube in a sealed sandwich box or bag to retain moisture. Seeds often germinate within a couple of days, although it may take longer.
Germination cubes are a popular choice for maximising germination rates. Once the seed has germinated, the cube can be transplanted into the next container for growth.
Important: Avoid pulling the seed casing away from the seedling, especially if you're a new grower, as this can damage the seedling. It is better to wait until the seed case dries out and falls off naturally. Removing the seed casing from the first set of baby leaves (cotyledons) too early can harm the young seedling and potentially kill it.
