The Perfect Grow, Ep. 5: The Best Soil for Weed

Soft Secrets
14 Feb 2023

Getting it right with the growing mixture is important to give a nice smooth smoke in the end, which is what we are all after for, aren’t we? Mixture essentially means using the best soil for weed there is, helping to maximize the plants’ growth, but in many cases it’s not even soil at all. Each type of mixture has varying degrees of difficulties, in particular how to go about nutrient feeding. Expert grower Drew Anger is here to explain all the mysteries on this subject in the fourth episode of The Perfect Grow, helping you to choose the best soil for your weed plants.

Different Types of Grow Mixtures

Now that our seeds have germinated in the previous episode, it’s time to create the best soil for our weed plants. The best soil for weed can be made up of many things, including organic soil, peat moss, coco coir, rockwool, and tons of other additives like perlite or vermiculite.

Each type of mixture has its own benefits as well as its own set of challenges. For example, with good organic soil, you will only need to feed water throughout the entire lifecycle of the plant. If you’re looking for a low maintenance way of growing, this would be the pick on the best soil for your weed plants. But with more advanced mixture types, like coco coir or rockwool, they will need a properly mixed nutrient-water solution for every single feeding throughout the plant’s entire growth cycle.

However, unlike organic soil, most other mixtures speed up the growth process because of other extra nutrients they contain. One could say that if the goal is to maximize the plant’s harvest, this is the best soil for weed to use. For instance, a peat moss dominant mixture allows for a higher porosity and makes more oxygen available for the roots, which essentially helps the plants grow faster, stronger, and healthier.

How to Prepare the Mixture and Create the Best Soil for Weed

There are some simple steps to take in the beginning. First, add the soil mixture in a bin and mix it with your hands until there are no clumps remaining. This is going to be very easy if you use a light mix.

Next, add the mixture in 15- or 19-liter pots. Making use of fabric pots that will let in a little more oxygen to the root zone, should contribute to better and faster growth. Fill up three quarters of the pots with the mixture and then just make a room in the center for the small cannabis plants to fit in.

As you transplant the young plants, you can add a dash of mycorrhiza and some rhizobacteria, which will further stimulate the growth of roots. Handle the baby plants gently, holding them as close to the roots as possible. Giving the plants enough room to grow, combined with some nutrients will result in the best soil for weed there is when looking to maximize your harvest.

When everything is ready you can place the plants in the tent. It’s good that you also use some kind of drip trays to capture any water runoff and keep the grow tent as clean as possible. Raisers will keep the plants off a cold floor as well as the plants above the runoff water and stop them from absorbing it back up.

Measuring pH levels of nutrient water mix

How to Feed the Cannabis Plants

One of the most daunting tasks for novice growers is preparing the nutrient water feed for the cannabis plants. But it is really just a matter of doing something a couple of times until you know how to do it, once you get the hang of it, it’s really simple. You follow a schedule for when to feed, and you make sure that the pH levels are in the desired range all along.

While creating the best soil for weed may seem difficult at the beginning, the good news is that once you select a brand of nutrients you want to use, then you just need to follow the brand’s exact growth schedule without much deviation. When you have the nutrient water mix ready, you should also make sure that it has the right level of pH. For most cannabis plants, the acceptable pH value is between 6.0 and 6.5.

Last but not least, don’t neglect the feeding of nutrients because the plants are in an early stage of growth. You will probably need to feed the cannabis babies with nutrient mix a week after they are transplanted into the larger pots containing the best soil for your weed plants.
