Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s candidate for President of the United States, called for the legalization of cannabis at federal level during a recent appearance at the All The Smoke podcast. “I just think we have come to a point where we have to understand that we need to legalize it and stop criminalizing this behavior,” Harris said in what would be her first public comments on marijuana legalization since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee.

The presidential elections are coming in November, and the polls are still very close. Following Joe Biden’s withdrawal, Kamala Harris, currently serving as his Vice President, was elected candidate for the Democratic Party. Her main opponent is Republican Party candidate and former president Donald Trump. Kamala Harris is slightly ahead of Donald Trump, 49% to 46%, according to the latest numbers

Cannabis Is a Hot Topic in These Presidential Elections

Cannabis has already been at the center of confrontation between the two candidates. In August, Trump accused Harris for having jailed many people over cannabis during her time as a prosecutor. “She put thousands and thousands of Black people in jail over marijuana,” Trump said in a Fox News interview.

Kamala served as a District Attorney of San Francisco between 2004 and 2011 and Attorney General of California between 2011 and 2017. The Trump alleged cases reportedly concern sale or possession with intention to sell, and did not include convictions for simple possession of marijuana.

But Kamala Harris seems to be all good with cannabis these days and she now supports legalization. Her latest remarks were aligned with an earlier statement from President Joe Biden who had said that nobody should go to jail because of marijuana.

Harris reiterated her position on legalization on the podcast All The Smoke, which is hosted by former NBA stars Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes, and has almost 1 million followers on YouTube.

“I just feel strongly people should not be going to jail for smoking weed. And we know historically what that’s meant and who’s gone to jail,” said Harris during the 47-minute conversation.

“Second, I think we have come to a point where we have to understand that we need to legalize it and stop criminalizing this behavior,” she said. “Actually, this is not a new position for me. I have felt for a long time, we need to legalize it, so that’s where I’m on that.”

Donald Trump recently also signaled that he is in favor of cannabis legalization, a view opposed by so many fellow Republicans. The 78-year-old candidate said that he would vote ‘yes’ for recreational use, which is on the ballot in his home state of Florida.

This is the first time in the history of American presidential elections that both candidates have expressed support on marijuana legalization.
