Oregon joins a growing list of American states with legal Cannabis laws
Celebrating the earliest moments of the implementation of voter-backed legislation from November, people across the state crowded together late Tuesday night, eagerly awaiting the countdown to midnight as if were some weed-themed New Year's Eve, joints and other smoking gear poised in hand. Recreational marijuana became legal in Oregon on Wednesday, July 1.
While some holdouts claim that they will try to block the opening of pot shops, which will likely happen sometime next year, legal retailing of Cannabis to adults is in the very near future for Oregon, adding to the list of western states with legal weed laws. Colorado residents have been publicly enjoying a full legalization of recreational pot, with Washington state suffering a slightly less favorable version of legal weed implementation. Alaska also recently added legal weed laws to their books after decades of promoting a pro-pot (or at least anti-intervention) stance.
Common sense was applied in the writing of the new policies and caveats include continued prosecution for impaired driving and trafficking across state lines - even to other states where pot is now legal, including neighboring Washington. Public consumption also remains illegal.
The good news, however, is that the new legal marijuana laws allow adults aged twenty-one and up to possess and consume weed at home, in addition to being allowed to grow up to four plants. In-home possession is limited to eight ounces (just under 227 grams) while public possession is restricted to just one ounce (28.3 grams).
Prospective pot retailers can submit business license applications starting in January of 2016.
