The American rapper, whose real name is Thomaz Cameron Jibril, is well-known for promoting marijuana use in his music. He gained recognition with his debut album "Show and Prove," released in 2006, and achieved international fame after signing with Atlantic Records in 2010, thanks to his hit single "Black & Yellow" and the subsequent album "Rolling Papers."

In addition to his music career, Khalifa is involved in the legal cannabis industry through his brand, Khalifa Kush, which offers various cannabis products. Khalifa Kush is one of the most successful celebrity cannabis brands available.

Arrest in Romania

In July 2024, Wiz Khalifa was arrested in Romania after being found in possession of 18 grams of cannabis following his performance. Romania has strict laws regarding cannabis use. The Romanian Directorate for the Fight Against Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) stated, "During a performance at a music festival held in the seaside resort of Costinesti, the accused was found in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis."

After the festival, Khalifa was detained but released shortly thereafter. He quickly left the country and thanked the authorities for his release, stating, "I'll be back soon, but without a big joint."

Appeal Ruling

Initially, Khalifa faced a fine of 3,600 Romanian lei, approximately 700 euros. However, the prosecutor appealed the fine, and the appeals court ultimately overturned it, sentencing him to nine months in prison instead. Khalifa was not present for his trial in Romania.

Now living in California, he is unlikely to return to Romania. Although an extradition request may be anticipated, experts suggest it is improbable that it would succeed. Romanian criminologist Vlad Zaha explained to the BBC, "Given the defendant's wealth and connections, Romania's lack of real bargaining power regarding extradition, and the legal and political status of cannabis in the United States, it is highly unlikely that Wiz Khalifa will be sent to serve a prison sentence in Constanța, even if a formal judicial request is submitted to the United States."
