A ROOFER from Whitstone, near Bude, who smoked up to half an ounce of cannabis per day has admitted growing the Class B drug at his home.
On Friday at Truro Crown Court, Neil Cann, 47, of Elton Cottages, pleaded guilty to the production of 2,666g of cannabis between January and December 2013.
Elaine Hobson, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said police searched Cann's home on December 22 last year and that they could smell the drug as soon as they entered the property.
She said: "Mr Cann says, ‘There is lots of it here, it is in the spare room and the shed. I am going to prison for this'."
Ms Hobson said Cann had two growing areas at the address and that there were a number of mature plants as well as cuttings.
Cann told police that it was his second crop, having smoked the 25 plants from the first one.
Ms Hobson said he described himself as a "constant cannabis user", who smoked up to half an ounce per day. She added that Cann would now be investigated by the police financial investigation unit and set a timetable for a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing.
Emily Cook, for the defence, said Cann suffered from anxiety and depression and that he had been injured in a car accident which had left him in a "great deal of pain".
She added that he worked occasionally as a roofer.
Sentencing Cann to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, Judge Christopher Harvey Clark, QC, said: "When police raided your property, your immediate reaction was that you thought you were going to prison.
"Well, because there is no evidence that you were actually cultivating the drug to supply to anyone else, I am not going to send you to prison today."
