A new study claims that cannabis is associated with an improved exercise experience, making running more enjoyable while reducing pain levels.

Researchers at the University of Colorado observed 49 runners. They asked them to rate various aspects of runs after consuming cannabis and without using it.

The study, published last week, found that the runners experienced "less negative affects, greater feelings of positive affects, tranquillity, enjoyment, and dissociation, and more "runner's high" symptoms during their cannabis runs vs their non-cannabis runs."

They were found to run a bit slower after consuming cannabis, 31 seconds slower per mile to be exact, but this was not statistically significant.

"Participants also reported lower pain levels after their cannabis vs non-cannabis run."

"Results suggest that acute cannabis use may be associated with a more positive exercise experience among regular cannabis users."

The positive effects of cannabis reported by the runners are consistent with a 2019 study, which found that people who use cannabis to boost their workout tend to get a more beneficial amount of exercise.

Older people who use cannabis are also found to be more likely to engage in physical activity. This is according to another study published in 2020.

Similarly, another study published in 2021 found that frequent cannabis consumers are more likely to be physically active than those that do not use cannabis.

It is also known that the use of medicinal cannabis is linked to "significant improvements" in the quality of life for those living with conditions such as insomnia or chronic pain and insomnia and that those effects are found to be"largely sustained" over time. This follows a study published by the American Medical Association (AMA).
