Around 200 cannabis plants have been discovered by firefighters inside a burning building.

Three fire engines were called to the derelict three-storey commercial unit on Burnley Road East in Waterfoot, and once inside they uncovered the cannabis set-up.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the ground floor to the premises was on fire when they arrived at around 4am on Tuesday.

They spent around an hour using hose reels and ventilation units to extinguish the fire and an aerial ladder platform was called from Preston to secure loose tiles on the roof.

Electricity North West and the National Grid were also called to secure external gas and electrical supplies to make the building safe.

Lancashire Police Inspector Andy Carter said: “It was an empty premises but when we got inside there was about 200 cannabis plants. We think the cause of the fire is faulty wiring because of the elaborate set-up. It's quite a big find.”

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
