Eagle-eyed police uncovered a cannabis stash worth almost £20,000 after responding to reports of suspicious activity in the West Street area of Crewe.

The ‘complex cannabis farm' was discovered last Tuesday (June 24) after patrols attended an address in West Avenue shortly before 2pm.

Officers had received a routine call about a house having been left insecure.

But enquiries made by police at the scene led them to a haul of mature cannabis plants, with a street value of approximately £18,500.

The plants were seized by officers and the elaborate growing equipment was dismantled and will be destroyed.

Ian Wheeldon, of West Avenue, was charged later that day with cultivation of cannabis.

The 31-year-old will appear before magistrates in Crewe on July 10.

Inspector Christian Watkins said: "We continue to successfully disrupt and dismantle drug use and distribution in our town and will always act on information provided to us by the public.

"Drug use is a blight on our community and is almost always a motivating factor for those who commit acquisitive crime.

"We have executed three drug warrants this week in Crewe alone, part of our commitment to keeping the public safe and reducing crime in our area."
