POLICE arrested a man for possession of cannabis as he celebrated his 36th birthday, a court has heard.

Peter Knights, of Trinity Gardens, stood before magistrates in Folkestone last Wednesday and pleaded guilty to the offence.

Sara Pilcher, prosecuting, explained that officers were at Knights' address on August 17 this year for an unrelated matter.

She said: "During the time they were there, they carried out a search and found some small amounts of herbal cannabis in various pots.

"It all amounted to about £50-worth and to his credit, he admitted that it was his and he had been using cannabis for about 18 years."

Miss Pilcher said there were about five or six different "amounts" in the flat but only enough to suggest that it was for personal use.

Chidi Umez, defending, said Knights was on disability living allowance as he was signed off work for medical reasons and that the subsequent stress was one of the reasons he used cannabis.

He added: "This particular day was his birthday and was why he had a slightly larger amount than usual.

"He knows that it's wrong. He has got previous convictions for similar offences but in the last three months he has been cutting down."

Chairman of the bench Jennifer Lennard said: "You seem to have a long-standing addiction. You have a number of previous convictions but you say you are cutting down and we would like to help you in any way we can."

Magistrates gave Knights a year-long community order with a supervision requirement and ordered him to pay a £60 victim surcharge.
