HAVING tried to kick his drug habit, a man decided to go back to his old ways so he could "get into the festival spirit" when he came to Glastonbury.

However police on duty at the festival in June searched Shaun Adam Thomas and found him in possession of a quantity of cannabis.

He was arrested and appeared in the dock before Somerset Magistrates, sitting at Yeovil this week.

Thomas, 21, of Chaffinch Glade, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to being in possession of a quantity of cannabis at Pilton on June 27.

The court was told that the defendant had gone to the Glastonbury Festival and when he was there was stopped by police.

"They searched him and found he was in possession of varying amounts of cannabis and it was seized and then analysed," said prosecutor Emma Chetland.

"There was a total of 13.3g of cannabis bush and the defendant made admissions to possessing it for his own use during interview with the police."

Probation officer Mo Laughton said that Thomas admitted responsibility for the offence saying his actions had been "stupid".

She said he formed a new relationship in January and his partner was not keen on him smoking cannabis.

"He had pretty much stopped using it but then made the silly decision to take some to the Glastonbury Festival with him so he could get into the festival spirit," she said.

Defending solicitor Louise Eaves said Thomas cooperated with the police on arrest and the total amount of cannabis was only small and valued at about £30.

The magistrates sentenced the defendant to a 12-month community order with a requirement to carry out 100 hours' unpaid work. Costs of £85 and a £60 victim surcharge were also imposed and an order was made for the cannabis to be destroyed.
