A MAN who was found with a large stash of cannabis at his home claimed he found it abandoned in a field in Merriott.
A court was told that Billy Hughes had decided to keep the large container of drugs for himself to help with pain caused by his bad health.
When police searched the caravan where he was living at the time they found the drugs and he was arrested.
Hughes, 32, of Marsh Lane, Tintinhull, pleaded guilty to being in possession of 83.06g of cannabis and cannabis resin at Merriott on April 19 when he appeared before South Somerset and Mendip Magistrates.
Defending solicitor Helena Suffield said: "Hughes was living with his partner near a big field in Merriott and it was there that he found a lot of items inside a caravan, including the container with the cannabis in it.
"He has had three major operations recently and his medication is not even touching the stress and pain."
Magistrates imposed a six-month conditional discharge along with £25 towards costs. They ordered the cannabis be forfeited and destroyed.
