A drug smuggler could be jailed for taking cannabis into a prison.

 

 

Virgilio Melim, 47, pleaded guilty to two offences of taking a prohibited article into a prison at Ipswich Crown Court.

The court heard that Melim, of Clipstone Street, London, had been caught with a quantity of cannabis in January at Highpoint Prison, Stradishall.

A pre-sentence report is currently being prepared, prior to Melim's sentencing at a later date.

Judge David Goodin told the 47-year-old that he would be granted bail until he returns to court to be sentenced this month.

He said: "You must understand that taking drugs into prison is ordinarily followed by custody. It is very much in the mind of the court."

Melim appeared in court on March 21.
