Drugs were found in the home of Christopher Lee, aged 42, after police raided his home with a search warrant.
When officers arrived, Lee was inside with his family, and in the house at Glan y Wern Road, Llansamlet, they found cannabis and a bag containing a white substance, later identified as amphetamines.
Officers then searched the shed and behind a false wooden wall found six cannabis plants.
The plants, with lighting and watering equipment, could have produced three crops in a year, a specialist drugs officer said.
In total they could have made between £8,000 and £10,000 of drugs each year, he added.
Lee pleaded guilty to producing cannabis, possessing amphetamines, possessing cannabis and supplying amphetamines.
Lee pleaded guilty at Swansea Magistrates' Court on a basis of the prosecution facts, saying he had possession of the drugs for his own use and was producing cannabis to save money.
He said he had sold amphetamines to friends but also said that that was not to make money.
More drugs belonging to him were found in a second garage, magistrates heard.
Probation officer Kerry Williams prepared a report on Lee before his sentencing by magistrates.
Lee told her he took drugs on a regular basis but did not see his drug use as problematic.
Magistrates then made him subject to a community order and told him to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
Lee was also ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.
