A female prison officer from Great Barr, who admitted having sex with an inmate and supplying drugs, is today beginning a stretch behind bars.
ulie Turton, 53 from Hembs Crescent, Hamstead, was convicted of six counts of misconduct after pleading guilty to communicating with prisoners via a mobile telephone, and admitted having engaged in sexual relations with an inmate. She also helped supply cannabis and a stereo system to prisoners.
Today (March 3) Turton, who had been a prison officer for 20 years and worked at HMP Birmingham, was sentenced to two years and eight months in jail at Birmingham Crown Court.
Her misdemeanors came to light following a six month joint investigation between HMP Birmingham and the Serious and Organised Crime Unit at West Midlands Police. Both agencies were concerned that an organised crime group with members serving time in prison was operating at HMP Birmingham. It soon became clear that there was someone working ‘on the inside' who was helping to bring things in for prisoners and an extensive undercover and surveillance operation was put in place.
