Police have issued a warning about the dangers of cannabis ‘factories’ after a number of plants were found growing in a terraced house.

Officers executed a search warrant under the Misuse of Drug Act at the house in Skipworth Street, Highfields, Leicester yesterday afternoon.

They found nine mature plants and a sophisticated system of lighting and ventilation.

Nobody was arrested at the scene.

Police said the people behind the ‘factory’ had manipulated the home’s electrics to power the cultivation equipment.

Inspector Ben Gillard, commander of Spinney Hill Park police station, said members of the public alerted his officers to the illegal growing operation.

Insp Gillard said: “Whatever people’s thoughts on cannabis, these cannabis factories present a real risk to public safety.

“We have had a number of fires in these places and it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured.

“In this case we acted on information passed to us by the community. If people report these places to us we will take action.

“Inquiries are ongoing and we anticipate making some arrests.”

Tell-tale signs of cannabis cultivation include windows permanently covered, a pungent smell, visits to the property at unusual times, a vent protruding through the roof or a rear window or a large number of empty bags of fertiliser in bins.
