Liem Nguyen was arrested when the police raided a property in Tollemache Avenue, near Abbey Lane, Leicester, where 201 illegal plants were being grown.
The 32-year-old Vietnamese national pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to producing cannabis between November 16 and December 15.
Jeremy Janes, prosecuting, said: "Officers found plants were growing in all three bedrooms and the loft.
"There were 98 adult cannabis plants and 103 nursery plants, with 44 lights operating, seven filters and 38 transformers. The electricity meter had been bypassed.
"Nguyen was arrested at the scene. He said he had come to the UK four weeks earlier, on the back of a lorry from Russia.
"He had been taken to this address and asked to do some work looking after the plants."
Carl Gaskell, mitigating, said: "He has a wife, two children and elderly parents to support back home in Vietnam. He has no status here, so is likely to be deported after the sentence."
