Smelly Shelley: the man's odour was so strong his probation officer became suspicious

A man who smelled strongly of cannabis when he met his probation officer at a courthouse said he was ‘not a fool' - before being found to have 19 bags of cannabis stuffed in his sock.

Darren Shelley, of Stamford, Connecticut, set alarm bells ringing when he turned up in probation officer Bronwyn Fisher's officer in the courthouse basement on 9 June smelling of the drug.

The 22-year-old insisted that he ‘did not bring drugs into the court', adding that his brother had been wearing his sweatshirt, which could account for the odour.

But a quick pat down immediately revealed that he was carrying 19 bags on cannabis in his left sock.

According to his arrest affidavit, Shelley has tested positive nine times for cannabis since March.

He was referred to a drug treatment agency in May and been tested a further two times since.

He tested positive for both.

Shelley was convicted of a risk of injury to a child charge in August 2013 and served nine months before being placed on probation, but he could now be made to serve all or some of his two year and three month suspended sentence.
