How to Grow Pink Cannabis
Pink cannabis strains include Pink Berry, Pink Kush and Pink Mango. Different strains depict the pink colour in different ways. In some strains, the calyxes are pink whereas with other strains just the pistils evolve to be pink. In other strains, the fan and sugar leaves can form pink and purple hues.
Why Is Weed Pink
There are two main reasons why cannabis can turn pink and they are genetics and environment. A plant’s genetics will overall determine the colouration it develops.
However, the interaction between the plant’s genetics and the growing environment will play a part in when and if that colouration is expressed by the plant.
The pinks, purples, reds and blues that are present in cannabis are produced by anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are colour pigments produced naturally by the plant.Â
There is evidence which suggests that the purple colour may be a form of natural antifreeze that protects plants in colder weather. Evidence also exists that indicates that dark colouration may be a way for plants to protect themselves from harsh UV exposure as they mature.
What Are the Effects of Pink Weed?
Pink weed effects are the same as standard weed, however some users profess that they feel it comes with its own distinctive high.
There is no evidence to suggest this, however. Pink cannabis contains a higher level of anthocyanins to give it its unique colouration, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to a more powerful high.
How Do you Grow Pink Weed?
While every unique plant is distinct, there are a few things you can do to try and get more vibrant buds.
1. Genetics
Start with a colourful strain. Pick strains that are understood to deliver pink buds and not just show pink colouration in the leaves. On occasion, pink strains will become vivid, colourful plants only to then morph into standard green buds after harvest and trim.
2. Temperatures
A cooler climate appears to increase anthocyanin production in some plants, so keep your grow room on the cooler side and even cooler temperatures overnight. For purple strains, your nighttime temperature should be below 70°F (21°C).
It's vital however not to allow temperatures to drop below 65°F (18°C). While cannabis can tolerate a modest amount of cold temperatures, go too cold and you will do more damage than good.
3. Lights
There is some evidence that suggests that an abundance of brilliant sunlight may be partially responsible for the change in leaf colour. Therefore purchasing high-quality lights is always a good idea.
Access to an abundance of light throughout the whole growth cycle not only promotes strong growth but it may also provide your plant with the intensity needed to persuade any colours out further.
It's crucial to bypass plant stress which can happen if they are exposed to too much light. You should keep plants several inches away from your grow lights to dodge plant burn and stress caused by overheating.
