Police have arrested a man after an 11-year-old girl took drugs to her school and gave them to another pupil.

Officers, the school and social services were alerted to the incident, which happened outside Heathfield Academy, in Earl Shilton, last month.

The substance handed over outside the Belle Vue Road school was found to be cannabis.

Police said the girl took the drugs to the school on May 16 and was seen passing them to another pupil.

Investigating officers worked alongside the school and social services after the drugs were discovered.

A 28-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of supplying a class B drug, has been remanded on police bail.

Sergeant Mel Thomas, of the Hinckley Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "As a result of the information received we attended the school and ascertained that the source of the drugs was from an address that we were aware of.

"With the assistance of the school and social services, we executed a warrant at the address, where a man was arrested for being concerned in the supply of class B drugs.

"Also at the address were two adults, who were cautioned for possessing class B drugs.

"I must stress this was an isolated incident and this is not a common occurrence at the school."

Graham Jones, head teacher of Heathfield Academy, said: "The school received a report that a student had passed a small amount of cannabis to another student outside the school after the end of the school day.

"The school takes the issue of drugs very seriously and dedicates curriculum time to ensuring students have an awareness of the dangers posed by drugs.

"This report was, therefore, investigated by the school and the school contacted the police.

"We are committed to working closely with the local community and the police to reduce the impact of drug misuse in this area.

"We are pleased to have been able to contribute to a positive outcome in this case."
