None of the players or their clubs has been named but three are trainees while the fourth is a senior first-team player.
The UK Anti-Doping used to report details of players who failed FA-funded tests for recreational drugs.
But the latest cases, which date back to January 2010, were revealed after being kept secret due to a 'mix-up' in communications between UK Anti-Doping and the FA.
Three of them tested positive for cannabis while another was busted for cocaine use, the Mail on Sunday reported.
It is not known which players took which drugs
Offenders are punished and then helped back into the game following a mandatory period of rehabilitation.
UK Anti-Doping stopped publishing the details in early 2010 without telling the FA, which then became aware of this following enquiries.
From 2005 to 2010, an average of seven players a year were caught and punished for recreational drug use, while numbers have now dropped to four in 30 months.
